leggiCretan Institutional Inscriptions
Now online!
We are pleased to announce the online publication of Cretan Institutional Inscriptions (http://cretaninscriptions.vedph.it), an Open Access collection of Greek inscriptions pertaining to the Cretan institutions of the period between the rise of the poleis and the Roman conquest of the island (VII-I cent. BC), with insights into the political entities of Crete and their institutional elements.
The main component of the database, built by using the EpiDoc Front-End Services (EFES), consists of the epigraphic collection of the 600 inscriptions shedding light on the institutional elements of the many political entities of Crete, for each of which an XML edition compliant with the TEI EpiDoc international standard was created.
The epigraphic collection, which comes with six thematic indices (lemmata, places, personal names, persons, divinities, institutions), is searchable and browsable according to a variety of combinable filters. The database also includes a collection of the main related literary sources, a catalogue of the attested Cretan institutions and a catalogue of the political entities of Crete, with a view to highlighting the specificity of each context.
Cretan Institutional Inscriptions has been created as part of the PhD research project in Ancient Heritage Studies carried out at the University of Venice Ca’ Foscari by Irene Vagionakis under the supervision of Claudia Antonetti and Gabriel Bodard.
It has been published by the Venice Centre for Digital and Public Humanities (VeDPH) and is hosted at the Institute for Computational Linguistics "A. Zampolli" of the National Research Council (ILC-CNR for CLARIN-IT). Its dataset is distributed under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0 International License at http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11752/OPEN-548.
